Overview The City of Gresham is seeking candidates for a Public Service Apprentice to work with the City's Facilities Maintenance Division. The successful candidate will learn how to ensure a clean, safe, and efficient workplace for all City of Gresham buildings. This position will work 19 hours per week. Hours will be 8:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m. Monday - Thursday, 8:00 a.m. - 11:00 a.m. Friday with the potential for flexibility upon mutual agreement between candidate and hiring manager.This position is not benefits eligible. Position Description Typical job duties include maintaining the appearance, safety, working order, and efficiency of City real estate, physical buildings, workspaces, and parking lots. This is a physical job that requires constantly moving and being re-directed based on changing situations. This position is assigned work through the Facilities Coordinator and will work with different Facilities Maintenance Technicians as new skills are learned. The Facilities Manager will oversee this position with support offered through the Facilities front office administrative staff. This is primarily an internal service position, where the needs of City Staff are served, but occasional interaction with the public does occur. The Public Service Apprentice may occasionally assist with front desk coverage and support. What you will get to do: You will learn how to care for public buildings in the City's portfolio as well as serve the staff and visitor needs at various locations. Some of the tasks you will perform include: * Preventative Maintenance - replacing filters, lubing machinery, replacing lightbulbs, cleaning gutters * Repair work - carpentry, small equipment, furniture, fixtures * Cleaning - light janitorial work, pressure washing, COVID-prevention wipedowns * Painting - remodels, wall damage repairs, outdoor wood staining, graffiti removal * Office support - moving furniture, building cube walls, setting up for meetings * Event support - set-up/take-down and transportation of event equipment, emptying trash, supporting event organizers as a runner * Landscaping - litter patrol, blowing, line-trimming, mowing, tree-trimming, sprinkler repair * Supply inventory - keeping PPE, sanitation, and shop supplies stocked and inventoried * Inter-facilities deliveries - driving City vehicles to pick up/drop off furniture, equipment, and supplies Qualities we are looking for: * A can-do attitude with a willingness to work, to learn, and to do your personal best. * An ability to recognize their contribution, as the work can sometimes be difficult, dirty, or mundane. * A continuous and curious learner who asks questions and is always seeking ways to improve, * A team player who works well with others, communicates and remains calm under pressure is desired. * Someone who can adapt to change and circumstances. The City's Facilities team is small but highly capable and a ready-to-work candidate is needed to help carry the workload as they learn the job. Qualifications Minimum Qualifications: * Education equivalent to completion of the twelfth grade and up to one (1) year of experience. * Physical ability to perform job duties (refer to Classification for requirements) * Valid Driver's License * Clean driving record according to our driving matrix (see below) Preferred Qualifications: * Some experience with landscaping equipment (powered and unpowered), hand tools, painting, and carpentry * Bi-lingual in Spanish and English You will be disqualified from this process if you possess any of the following driving infractions: * A major traffic offense or accident that results in death or major injury * Driving under the influence (DUI) offense within the last 5 years * Have more than 3 moving violations within a 3-year period or more than 2 within a one-year period * Have more than 2 accidents within a 3-year period Any offer of employment will be contingent upon successful completion of a criminal background check, employment physical, drug screen and driving record review.
