Pay Range: $16.30 - $30.00 Hourly Department: Library Department Job Type: Intern Exemption Status: United States of America (Non-Exempt) Closing Date (Open Until Filled if No Date Specified): April 09, 2026 The Opportunity: Pay Rate: $24/hour Job Type: Temporary College Intern Duration: June through September 2026 Approximate schedule: 15-25 hours/week. During the summer, our public programs are Tuesday-Saturday from 1:30-4:30pm, with occasional Monday afternoons or Tuesday evenings. Our intern will primarily be scheduled during these hours (1-5pm), with the option for additional hours (11am-1pm) if interested in a longer shift. Intern schedule is fairly flexible within these parameters: Tuesday - Saturday 11:00am - 5:00pm Work location: Rockwood Library Makerspace, 17917 SE Stark, Portland, OR 97233 TriMet Passes are available for interns taking public transit to Rockwood Library. Overview: The Rockwood Library Makerspace is a collaborative learning environment at Rockwood Library with an emphasis on middle and high school learners. We offer no-cost access to cool technology (3D printers, laser cutting and engraving, sewing machines, custom t-shirt/tote bag/tumbler printing, and more), workshops and camps, adult and teen mentors, project ideas, art supplies, and a space for teens to hang out. The makerspace specializes in connecting teens’ personal passions and interests to new skills and innovative equipment to make anything possible. We are looking for an enthusiastic and creative assistant to work with staff to provide programs and support for teens in the makerspace. No previous makerspace experience required - what’s most important is that our intern feels comfortable working with diverse patrons and is excited to learn how to use makerspace equipment and software! Internship Description & Responsibilities may include: Assist staff in the Rockwood Library makerspace Support public programs for teens, adults and families Work on makerspace related projects Research creative curriculum and projects Support Rockwood staff with makerspace outreach efforts Provide culturally appropriate and responsive assistance to the diverse community that is the geographic center of Multnomah County’s Rockwood neighborhood. Learning Outcomes: Gain proficiency in using and teaching the library’s maker tools, including 3D printers, laser cuts, vinyl stickers, and more. Develop leadership and communication skills in working with the public, especially teens. Foster strong problem solving skills through hands-on co-creation with patrons. Build project management skills by co-designing and implementing creative programs. The Ideal Candidate will: Be comfortable and enthusiastic working with teens and adults in the library. Be excited about learning and using creative technologies. Have the ability to work independently with minimal supervision as well as the ability to collaborate within a team environment. Communicate, understand, and follow written and oral instructions; ask questions if unclear. Be flexible, cooperative, and able to adapt and thrive in a changing environment. Knowledge/Skills/Abilities Required: Comfortable and excited about learning new creative skills. Enjoy building positive mentoring relationships with teens. Enjoy talking with people and providing information and instruction to groups and individuals. Enjoy working with technology and crafts. Open to troubleshoot technology and problem solve with staff. Ability to work and communicate effectively with people from different cultures. Ability to communicate effectively with others.
